Images of US Marines, and agents from the Drug Enforcement Agency and Afghan National Interdiction Unit raid narcotics labs in Afghanistan's Nimruz province as part of an effort to interdict heroin trafficking. Nimruz, Afghanistan. 02/03/2010. The combined task force arrived in the early hours of Tuesday morning with the hope of interdicting heroin before it reached the local bazaar. With the probability of unreliable intelligence, and the unmissable arrival of the large convoy to the area last night, the chance of catching anyone seemed dubious. The NIU and DEA agents shifted from one compound to the next questioning the inhabitants and searching. These were the houses of poppy farmers. They reported a bad crop this last season. It had been a cold winter, but March is the traditional planting time for the June harvest. The narcotics trade in Afghanistan is believed to be implicitly linked to the insurgency, as well as many other counter-stability activities. During their time in power, the Taliban imposed a ban on the poppy crop, backed by ruthless measures. Yet within a matter of months they reversed the decision, turning to it as a source of valuable revenue to fund their campaigns against the Northern Alliance. Still, a few of the Marines did not see the point of a mission that would potentially damage peoples livelihoods, whilst having little direct impact upon the insurgency. The agents, lead by the DEA team, were after the opium and heroin traffickers, not the poppy farmers. To do so would be to invite mass insurrection. Compound after compound, all claim not to know where the heroin was processed. In such close knit communities and tribal ties, business can often be a family affair. Outsiders can only glimpse the structure. Searching finally yielded results as a large opium processing plant was discovered in a nearby compound, containing huge quantities of base chemicals and apparatus used in heroin production. NIU agents kicked down the doors to discover warm rooms and piles of ash that DEA agents believed to be opium, burnt within the last 24 hours. It seemed whoever had been here knew we were coming. DEA agents calculated that a lab this size alone could produce 100kg of heroin per day. At $60,000 per kilo bulk value in the USA that is a sizable amount of trade. Actual treet value would be much higher. This was the largest lab that the DEA agents had ever seen. Most strikingly, unlike other provinces in Afghanistan, nothing was hidden. Until our arrival, there had been no need to. This was the first time ISAF had stepped into this lone corner of western Nimruz. Likewise the local ANP are suspected to not interfere in the opium trade out of implication or agreement. Continued searching of other locations revealed two more similar facilities. In one, 22 Afghans were blocked before they could escape. They stood, facing the wall with looks of worry on their faces as agents tolled up the narcotics. Some were as young as 14. Three men, informed to be the managers of the lab were detained after refusing to name their boss. The rest of the workers were released. Interesting was their fellow Afghan NIU agents diligence to ensure that detainees were given water and the workers had their jackets before they left. With three labs destroyed the task force withdrew back into the desert, swallowed by a billowing dust storm. It had been along day but had already made the operation a huge success within the terms of what it set out to achieve. Yet it seems today's interdiction effort has only scratched the surface of a trade in a region whose economy evolves around the poppy. The DEA works independent from all other agencies in Afghanistan. Yet if we are to see any real long term success in eradicating heroin production in Afghanistan, ultimately such measures will have to be coordinated with agricultural initiatives that provide a sustainable alternative for the farmers.
The Heroin Sting: Operation Southern Flood, Day II

US Marines on patrol while providing security in the southern town of Delaram, in the silent battle to secure the Afghan population. Delaram, Afghanistan. 19/02/2010. Flying across Afghanistan's Helmand province into the heart of the insurgency. Barren, inhospitable land to the unassuming eye. For US Marines in the turbulent south a large portion of their time is dedicated to patrolling secured areas. This is the routine of counterinsurgency, walking the land looking for ghosts. Such patrols act as a show of force, as well as a chance to interact with the local populous, securing them. How this is received depends on where the Marines are and how they act. Here in Delaram the population is said to be 80% in favour of the Marines presence and 20% opposed. The Marines of this battalion are favored by the local populous over the previous battalion, which was said to have been too heavy handed. The implications of which are significant. Whilst the previous battalion suffered from many IEDs, these Marines, using more toned down methods, have been informed by the townsfolk of every IED laid by the Taliban that they know of since the beginning of their tour. This is the cornerstone of what the Marines are trying to achieve in the mostly silent battle to secure the Afghan population. Yet some gazes still hold reluctance. A dog, aggressively guarding its masters door is shot by one of the Marines. Often trained to be aggressive, dogs are a constant problem for ISAF troops. Yet this one had not charged. A dog's life is cheap here, but looking back down the street, as a women and children passing by loiter around the corpse with its gaping exit wound, one wonders of the greater implications. Such things mean more work for the battalions Civil Affairs Team, who are still handing out compensation payments from the previous battalion's tour. The patrol moves on, indifferent, they have seen a lot in their time here. A gaggle of children shadow the patrol, or laying in ambush with their demands for chocolate and pens. The Marines hand out Jolly Ranchers, pens and take pictures with disposable cameras, memories they mail home to remind them of what is was like here. Back 'inside the wire' the marines debrief. The corporal covers alternate methods to deal with dogs, but this is just another day in the routine.

Whilst the media's attention focuses on Operation Moshtarak, counting the casualties as the public debates if the war is winnable, large parts of the remainder of Helmand have been largely pacified by US Marines. I joined the CAAT (Combined Anti-Armour Team) of the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines on a patrol in Afghanistan's Helmand Province to see what the war was like for the majority of those not grabbing the headlines. (images taken 22-23/02/2010) These marines form part of the 2MEB that deployed to Helmand last year with a focus on pacifying their areas of operation before expanding into new territory towards the south. The CAAT team function as the battalions quick reaction force, always on call 24/7. They ride in several MRAP armoured vehicles specially designed to resist IED's whilst capable of traversing very rough terrain. This time the team was tasked to provide over-watch security for 36 hours in the Baji Bast Pass, allowing resupply convoys to reach outlying patrol bases. The pass, dominated by the Three Kings mountain, is a natural choke point favoured by the Taliban for planting IED's and ambushing vulnerable resupply convoys, named 'combat trains'. The strength of resistance meant that previously all supplies flowing north to Golestan had to go by air. A Marine operation cleared the pass without resistance, re-opening the resupply route by 'road'. That road is a compass bearing along the base of a pass whose surface resembles that of Mars. And so, after an early start, the team reaches their positions below the towering mountains and wait. There are insurgents in the area but the strong presence of Marines has reduced their willingness to attack. And so the war is fought along other, more subtle lines. The Marines continuously scan the area to ensure no IED's are laid, and observe the local traffic. The odd bike picks its way up the pass, or goat herds wander from the nearby nomad tents through an abandoned village. The vehicle is crewed by three marines, commander, driver and gunner, as well as their medic, a Navy Corpsman. They take it in turns to man the Mk.19 grenade launcher, or resting in the drivers seat. They are young. Some have girlfriends, are engaged or married. They talk of back home, of how much 29 Palms California, where they are based, looks just like Afghanistan. The hours drone on endlessly, but the scenery is beautiful. They swap rations from the MRE's, smoke, smoke again, bet on if there will be an IED, and talk of movies, women, celebrities, women, cars, rifles, hopes, dreams and... women. It isn't summer yet, but by day the sun bakes one in their heavy body armour. The combat train, a long line of armoured and logistical vehicles better suited to a highway bounces its way across the martian terrain. By night the temperature drops as the Marines take turns pulling nigh time security. There is no ambient light in the valley, just that of the moon and the canopy of stars. It is beautiful. The next day... waiting, and more of the same. The mountain we sit under looks less beautiful today, the hours longer. Three young boys approach the vehicle, having walked from beyond the horizon. Fumbled Pashto and hand signals reveals that they are merely curious, and thirsty. The Corpsman gives them water, and beef jerky before they disappear into the heat haze, as specks shimmering over the horizon from whence they came. The Marines talk of their tour, of clearing out Naw Zad and when things were more exciting. This is Helmand, but it is for the most part peaceful. The odd firefight or IED. War is, as they say, 99% boredom. This vehicle was their third. It is ok, but not their favourite. Their first was ok, but they struck an IED. Their second was brand new, but they left it at another base that had yet to receive any, this one is ok, only. The radio crackles, jokes and banter back and forth between the vehicles, or indicators of approaching traffic. The radio crackles again, the combat train won't be doing its return run today, it has been 'pushed to the right' until tomorrow morning. The 36 hour mission has just become 48, but such is life. The next morning spirits lifted as the combat train approached, clumsily fumbling its way up the pass. That meant a return to flat beds, warm shower and three ample meals a day. But the break is short lived, they are the quick reaction force after all, and this is just another day in a long tour. They clean up their vehicles, fix faulty equipment, and get ready for the next day's patrol, and on it goes, at least for a few more month, until they get to go home.
