Les Plaies-Mobiles, a 'fanfare' (French for a raucous band) well known for its lively street performances in and around Paris, plays on the steps of the Opéra Garnier on 15 February 2009. The group was started by six players over ten years ago. It now has 30 active musicians and some 40 ex-players. New members don't have to be able to play an instrument when they join, but they have to learn fast: within one year they will have learned 35 numbers off by heart. This repertoire enables them to play at weddings, village festivals and other public occasions.

Chinese economist Fan Gang takes part in a forum discussion on 3 July 2009 at the Global Think Tank Summit in Beijing organised by the China International Centre for Economic Exchanges (CCIEE). Dr Fan is one of China's most influential economists and one of China's leading reform advocates. Based in Beijing, he is the Director of the National Economic Research Institute (NERI) and Chairman of the China Reform Foundation, China's first economic think-tank. Trained at the Chinese Academy of Social Science (CASS) and Harvard University, he is also a professor at several top universities in China. Dr Fan Gang is an adviser to China's central government and regional governments and is on the Monetary Policy Committee of the country's central bank, the People's Bank of China and an adviser to the State Administration of Foreign Exchange and several Chinese ministries.

Lofthouse 2000 Brass Band plays at Temple Newsam Estate near Leeds in West Yorkshire under the baton of its musical director, Andrew Whitaker, on 16 August 2009. The band, based in Lofthouse, between Leeds and Wakefield, was started by Mr Whitaker in 1999 as an intitiative to develop musical talent in school children. They have now grown up and a few older musicians have been added.
