A performance of daring, freestyle motocross riding was held in Freedom Square today as part of the Red Bull X-Fighters Exhibition Tour. Taipei, Taiwan. 16/01/2010. There was a performance of freestyle motocross riding at Freedom Square in Taipei. It was part of the Red Bull X-Fighters Exhibition Tour. Four riders flew through the air in the space between the National Theatre and National Concert Hall. They performed a range of daring maneuvers including backflips.

More than a thousand workers from Southeast Asia marched through the streets of Taipei today. The march had the slogan “Still no day off” and called on the Council of Labor Affairs (CLA) to ensure that workers have one day off per week. The protest is a biennial event which began in 2003 and is held near the date of Human Rights Day. Taiwan has more than 300,000 migrant workers from Southeast Asia. The situation of domestic workers was highlighted. Foreign workers hired to do domestic work receive a minimum salary of NT$15,840 compared to the minimum basic wage in Taiwan of NT$17,280. These workers are often on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Another group arguing for their rights were the “stateless Chinese”. These people hold ROC passports but don’t have an ID card in Taiwan and are denied some of the rights available to Taiwanese citizens. A man from the group told me there are about 1,800 people in this situation who were originally from the Philippines.

25,000 people participated in the LGBT Pride Parade in Taipei, the largest LGBT Pride event in Asia. Taipei, Taiwan, 10/31/2009. ----------------------------- Taipei's LGBT Pride Parade is the biggest LGBT Pride event in Asia. This year 25,000 people took part. The event started and finished on Ketagalan Boulevard in front of the Presidential Office. The theme for this year's parade was 'Love Out Loud'. The parade called on the government to take action on gay rights. Politicians often make promises before elections but never follow through with action once they are elected.

Anti-gambling activists protested outside the Ministry of Education in Taipei. They questioned why the Ministry had allowed universities and colleges to open gambling management classes while gambling was still not legally allowed in Taiwan. The protest occured in the lead-up to a referendum to be held on Penghu on 26 September. The referendum will ask Penghu residents to vote on whether to allow the development of casinos on the islands.
