More than 80% of Tasmanian's devil population have been wiped out by Devil Facial Tumour Disease; DFTD is contagious cancer that scientists are only beginning to understand, but has spread rapidly through the population, leaving the devil listed as endangered. In December 2009, it was announced that the disease may be related a peripheral nerve cell, called the Schwann cell, which has led some hopes for preserving the devil, at least in terms of quarantine insurance populations. Scientists are trapping and monitor the animals on the Forestier Peninsula as part of a programme to control the further spread of the disease and to create insurance populations, such as the one pictured, at Taroona, near Hobart. Devil Facial Tumour Disease is one of few known contagious cancers, and causes a tumour on the mouth of the animals that causes them to starve to death. The disease has spread rapidly through the population, with the devil now listed as endangered by the IUCN. The night shots are are of wild Tasmanian devils, photographed near Arthur River, Tasmania.

At the World War 2 Remembrance Ceremony at Dam Square, Amsterdam, Netherlands, Queen Beatrix was heavily protected by police, troops and snipers, following the deaths of several spectators on April 29, when a driver killed several spectators in an apparent attempt on the Queen's life. At the event in Dam Square, the rooftops were lined with snipers.

On April 1st, 2009, the Dublin Festival of Fools was revived after a 10 year hiatus. Several events took place - more details at <a href='http://www.festivalfools.com'>www.festivalfools.com</a>. These pictures show the Walking Tour of Places of No Historical Interest which departed the Millennium Spire at 1800 hrs and took and absurd twist around Dublin City Centre. The Festival of Fools is also a revival of the Medieval Festival of Fools, as well as being a celebration of the 43rd anniversary of the death of Irish author and humourist Flann O'Brien AKA Myles na Gopaleen.
