on June 21st, 2009, Greenland moved from a status of 'home rule' to 'self-governance, following a referendum in 2008. Greenland, rather than Denmark, will control the police and courts while the official language will become Greenlandic. The handover ceremony was attended by Queen Margarethe II of Denmark and other members of the Danish Royal Family, as well as the president of Iceland and other Nordic politicians.
