Every year (since 1968) between Christmas and the New Year’s Eve, Sighetu Marmatiei's center turns into a large carnival, with colorful masks and strange characters such as the Goat, the Whitebeard, Lady Death or the three Magi parading along the crowded streets. Peasants dressed in traditional costumes parade in the town center, horse riders and carriages with carol singers and masked people present customs from Maramures and other parts of the country. This is the Marmatia Festival of Winter and Christmas Traditions that gathers folk groups from villages in the Land of Maramures, that re-enact ancient traditions, sing carols and perform old rituals.

Do you remember Natividad, the dog starved to death for art in 2008? This is about to happen again, not in Costa Rica but in Romania, and not in the name of art but because these dogs don't bring an income. 15 km away from Baia Mare, in Northern Romania, a house had been put up for sale. In the meantime, its owners moved in an apartment, leaving 6 Rottweilers behind iron bars. The dogs, between 6 months and 3 years old, were meant to bring an extra income to the family. But it didn't happen as it was expected, so in this context no dogs sale means no money which means no food for the dogs. What makes them different from other abandoned dogs is the fact that they are still closed in iron cages, not being able to search for food or be fed by someone else. The owners pass by two times a week, showing the house to potential buyers. These are the only times when the dogs get small portions of food and water, meant to keep them alive. And every time the owners pass by, one adult dog or the 3 puppies are freed from their cages for the next few days. The photos are taken from inside a neighbor's yard, the only place where one could get in to feed the 'lucky' dog freed from its cage. The owners were suggested to give away the dogs but they refused, saying they invested a lot in them and the dogs are only for sale. But obviously, no one is buying them because they are underweight and they aren't anymore small pups. This is not only an awareness message, but also a call for help. There must be a way to take these dogs out of that property and there surely are some loving families who could take care of them. If anyone can help, please get in touch.

Over 15,000 of Romanian workers from all over the country protested low wages in the capital on Wednesday, rallying outside government headquarters. Bucharest, Romania. 10/07/2009. The protest comes after over 800,000 of public sector workers staged a one-day strike on Monday to put pressure on the country's government before a November presidential election. Unions want a minimum monthly salary of 650 lei (€155, US$228) in 2010 and are demanding that the government scrap a measure forcing workers to take 10 unpaid vacation days this year.

Organized by the Romanian Accept Organization, 2009's Diversity March is part of GayFest, reaching its 6th edition. Its main purpose, like in the previous years, was the civil partnership. Around 200 persons joined the march, the majority being part of the LGBT community. There was as well a small number of foreigners and several persons wearing inscriptions like 'Not gay but tolerant'. Although none of the Romanian officials was present, 2009's GayFest March was joined by Robin Barnett, the British ambassador in Bucharest, Jaap L. Werner - the Dutch ambassador, Mats Aberg - the Swedish ambassador and Petr Doklada, the ambassador of the Czech Republic in Bucharest. There were as well several foreign members of the European Parliament and diplomats' families. Following the aggressive incidents which happened in the previous years during and after the Gay Parade, this was the first year with no incidents as the participants were highly protected, over 700 policemen securing the closed area where only the manifestants and the journalists were allowed.

Organized by Pro-Vita Orthodox Federation, the Romanian Family Alliance, and the Romanian Orthodox Forum, The March for Normality is being organized every year as a reaction to GayFest, opposing gay rights and promoting christian family values. The march started at 17.30 on May 22nd 2009, in Bucharest. Around 400 persons took part in this year's march, praying, singing religious songs and the Romanian anthem. They carried along banners like 'For a normal family say NO to sodomy', 'Wake up!' 'Romania is not Sodom', 'In who's hands are our children?' 'We want a father and a mother, not two fathers or two mothers', 'God created man and woman', 'You ruined the economy, save at least the family'. The March was organized after family and religious principles: 'Our children will lead us, the priests in the second row, and the rest will follow' and '7 by 7' said one of the organizers. The March ended around 20.00 with several speeches held by representatives of the organizing institutions stating that homosexuality is a sexual perversion', 'sexual perversions are contagious psychical diseases' and calling all Romanians to wake up and 'stop the homosexual epidemic'. Another similar march was held on May 23, a few hours before the Gay Parade.
