The Slow Down London festival got off to a slow start today (24 April) as the Big Slow Walk ambled its way across Waterloo Bridge during Friday evening rush hour. Young and old, who had gathered in Victoria Embankment Gardens, enjoyed some of London’s loveliest river views in a relaxed and leisurely manner as stressed and anxious commuters rushed past oblivious to the joys to be had of slowing down. Following a pace used in slow forms of walking mediation the walk took about half an hour for some of the most relaxed people in London to cross the bridge. Slow Down London is a new project to inspire Londoners to improve their lives by slowing down to things well, rather than as fast as possible. The festival, on from 24 April - 4 May, will offer activities and inspiration for rushed and stressed Londoners. Whether some of the irritated and, at times, abusive office workers found it at all restful is another matter. Your own intrepid reporter, who has covered G20 marches and anti police rallies in recent weeks, can say categorically this is the most hostility he has ever faced on a shoot…being spat on, barged out the way and sworn on by commuters in a rush to get home. It’s clear London still has a way to go before it learns to appreciate the art of snails pace!

London Mayor Boris Johnson celebrated St George’s Day in style today (23 April), taking a trip on an iconic Routemaster bus alongside celebrity chef Gary Rhodes. They joined a colourful festival of quintessentially English food and drink at Leadenhall Market, where the Mayor gave a speech at the historic market, as well as meeting with traders, city workers, morris dancers, pearly kings and queens and members of the public. The Mayor said: “At last, the country is getting excited about St George’s Day, without embarrassment or fear of reproach, for England has so much to be proud of. What better to celebrate our patron saint than in the English capital.” There has been enormous interest in this year’s St George’s Day celebrations, not just in London, but around the country with celebrations in many towns and cities. As the Mayor concluded: “Let’s raise a flag, if not a glass for our patron saint.” Cheers Boris and good health Saint George!

To celebrate William Shakespeare’s birthday and the 400th anniversary of the publication of his sonnets the Globe Theatre, in London’s Bankside, threw open its doors for free on 19 April. By 11am, when the doors opened, a queue of excited visitors stretched back past the Tate Gallery all eager to get a chance to see behind the scenes at the world famous theatre. Inside various displays, exhibitions and performances entertained people of all ages. From thrilling sword fights beneath the stage to medieval dark lady soothsayers predicting fun for all there was plenty for visitors to see and do.

Prarameswaran Subramaniam, a 28 year old Tamil Sri Lankan, continues his hunger strike in Parliament Square, central London, as Tamils demand the British government intervene in the ongoing conflict in Sri Lanka. Mr Subramaniam, who began his hunger strike on 7 April, has vowed to continue until his “last breath” unless an end is brought to the alleged genocide carried out by the Sri Lankan government on the Tamil people. Surrounded by friends and kept warm with a duvet in a makeshift tent, Mr Subramaniam barely managed to open his eyes a couple of times as food depravation leaves his body increasingly weak and exhausted. Yet in those brief moments of interested lucidness there was a glimpse of fierce pride and determination in his eyes. The fine spring weather also brought out many Tamil supporters who all demanded that the media in Britain report on their plight. Despite the attendance of families and high spirits, there was a heavy police presence around the square.

Around 30 protestors gathered outside the headquarters of City of London police on 18 April to demonstrate against the use of Kettling tactics used by the police during recent G20 demonstrations. Kettling involves demonstrators being pushed and directed by police into certain areas to alleviate pressure points and allow rising tensions to “let off steam”. Protestors claim police have used this tactic irresponsibly, leaving demonstrators stuck in areas without access to food or water and first aid. The protest today was peaceful and good humoured as various speakers gave personal accounts of inappropriate actions used recently by the police. This all comes hot on the heels of news that a police officer has been questioned under caution about the manslaughter of Ian Tomlinson at the G20 demonstrations in the City of London on 1 April 2009 and evidence of police officers concealing their identity numbers at such demonstrations. The Government of the Dead also announced that Friday 24 April would be Lights Out Day in tribute to Ian Tomlinson and all those who have died in police custody in the last 40 years. Between 8.30pm and 9.30pm lights will be turned off across the capital as a mark of memorance, and organisers are hopeful that Canary Wharf will join in with this protest.
