Numerous NGOs, society and academicians have demanded that the language of teaching mathematics and science in Malaysian schools to be Bahasa Melayu, the national language. Since their plight has fallen into deaf ears, a mass rally was organized in the capital city to hand in a memorandum to the king, requesting His Majesty's interference.

Some incidents occured where the riot police force opened fire with water cannons and tear gas. The protestors took refuge inside the national mosque which was not safe from the bombardment. Salvos of tear gas canisters were shot into the mosque compound.
