Former President of Iran's Football Federation and political opponent Safaei Farahani meets with veteran revolutionary, once Chief of Tehran City Council and ex-political prisoner of 3 years for his role in the election protests, Abdullah Nouri. 26/1/10. Tehran, Iran.
Abdoulah Nouri is a senior politician and veteran of the Iranian revolution, the meeting coincides with the celebration of the ’11 days of dawn’ that began on Monday, 25 January marking the beginning of the Iranian revolution and the overthrowing of the Iranian monarchy.
The cleric was sentenced to prison in 1999 for 5 years charged with religious dissent, even though during the years of the revolution he was known as the trusted lieutenant of the Grand Ayatollah Khomeini.
He was under house arrest from 1997 for changing his allegiance to the Mir Hussein Mousavi but still remained a prominent figure in Iranian politics and was declared by editor, Sadaq Saba as the "most outspoken reformist".
In 1999 he was elected as the Chief of the City Council of Tehran and in the same year founded the reformist newspaper publication 'Khordad' which was soon shut down after his trial.
Abdullah Nouri was placed on trial in 1999 under the charges of insulting Islam and the Grand Ayatollah Khomeini, he was found guilty and was sentenced to Iran's infamous Evin prison that to this day still hosts key political opponents of the regime.
He was given compassionate leave from the prison in 2002 after the death of his brother so that his father would not lose all his son's.
Mohsen Safaei Farahani served as a 'Majlis' member from 1999- 2003 and is a member of the Mosherikat party. He was the former President of the Iranian Football Federation but was suspended by the world football governing body FIFA for his interference in Iranian politics.
Farahani was arrested last year by the Iranian authorities for his role in the protests over the alleged election fraud and has so far served 7 months of his "temporary detention", during his 5-day release period he met with Abdullah Nouri.
