The protest which was organised by PAME - the Greek Communist Party (KKE)  backed trade union - was the first large scale protest, since the centre-left Pasok goverment led by the Prime Minister George Papandreou announced austerity measures, three days ego, in order to regain the international confidence in country's economy. 

PAME also had called for a 24-hour strike across the country today, and a large rally and demonstration was also held today in the Greek capital Athens, as well as in other cities.
