Katman Bazaar is a small block located in the Old city of Kashgar in the Xinjiang province of China. The Uyghur blacksmiths have worked in these quarters for hundreds of years. Like most parts of the ancient Kashgar, Katman Bazaar is now under constant danger of being demolished for the sake of urban development supported by the Chinese government. Hajim, an 18-year-old apprentice is working at his father's forge. Rosajim, a young master blacksmith stands in front of the fire in his forge. Aziz, standing behind rows of forged knives and chisels in his forge. Blacksmith apprentice Abletjan (right), swings the hammer as his master, Rosajim (left), is pointing the spots to hit. Mohammed has worked as a blacksmith over 40 years. Today he is working alone at his own forge earning less than 10USD a day. The stone carving village of Dong Hai, located next to the Marble Mountains in Vietnam is famous for traditional stone engraving and stone-cutting crafts. Dong Hai, Vietnam, 24/09/2009. The stone carving village of Dong Hai, located next to the Marble Mountains is famous for traditional stone engraving and stone-cutting crafts. A lot of the businesses are family owned and even today more than 600 families are involved in the business of stone engraving and jewelry making. Vietnam exports the marble and stone sculpture products. However, direct rock extraction from the mountains was banned recently which has led to transportation of materials from the quarries in Quang Nam province. Marble Mountains is a group of five marble and limestone hills located in Ngu Hanh Son district south of Da Nang city in Vietnam. The five mountains are named after the five elements of the universe based on classic Chinese thinking; Kim (metal), Thuy (water), Moc (wood), Hoa (fire) and Tho (earth). The mountains have numerous cave entrances, tunnels and buddhist sanctuaries, which have also made them a popular tourist destination.

Taiwan’s Keelung Ghost Festival is a cultural event that takes place during the seventh lunar month. The seventh lunar month is known as the 'Ghost Month' in Taiwan, during which all unseen souls are released from hell and allowed to return to the living world for a one-month holiday. The city-wide celebration of Keelung Ghost Festival dates back 150 years to a tragic historical episode involving a clash between rival clans. On the 14th day, a parade is held in downtown Keelung for the releasing of the water lanterns. After midnight on the 15th day, the water lanterns are set adrift into the sea. Every year the downtown parade and the release of the lanterns into the sea attracts tens of thousands of locals and tourists.

Hundreds of Uyghur farmers are manually constructing roads and river banks in the Khotan riverbed near the city of Khotan in Xinjiang province in China. The Khotan river is formed by the union of the White Jade (Yurungkash) and Black Jade (Karakash) rivers and it only carried water during the summer due to melting snow. There are accusations of still ongoing practice of forced Uyghur labor (Hasha) organized by the local government officials in Xinjiang for the sake of infrastructure development. The Uyghur man and women are working long days with primitive tools and methods spending the nights under the trees by the road side. When an older Uyghur worker was asked about salary, he claimed not being paid anything for the work.

Kashgar (Kashi in Chinese) is in Xinjiang province in the extreme west of China at the edge of the Taklamakan Desert. It has a long history as an important trading center where the two branches of the ancient silkroad meet. The Kashgar population is a mixture of Uyghurs, Han Chinese, Kyrgyz, Tajiks and Uzbeks. Today, over 77 percent of Kashgar city's 325,000 citizens are Uyghur Muslims. Modern Uyghurs are the descendants of ancient Turkic tribes including Uyghurs and ancient Caucasian inhabitants of Tarim basin. The old city of Kashgar is one of the best-preserved examples of traditional Islamic cities in central Asia. However, in recent years the Chinese government has begun implementing its plans for modernization of the urban areas by tearing down old parts of the city and replacing it with contemporary Chinese style constructions. The redevelopment is claimed to improve the safety of the built environment from earthquakes: many of the older buildings built of mud and straws are considered to be vulnerable to seismic events. These plans for redevelopment endanger the preservation of important cultural history and diversity.
