8th of September is remembered as the day when the Siege of Leningrad started in 1941. This day is now marked as the day to remember the victims of that siege, and to honor those who lived through. A ceremonial meeting was held in Solyanoi alley, where the Siege museum is located. Guard of honor brought in the banners of the armies of the Leningrad front, a couple officials said short speeches, songs of the time were sung. Some wartime cars and other relics of the age were displayed. There was a fair number of veterans present, some just silently remembering what they have lived through, some moved by the songs and the words, some proudly wearing their medals and some clutching one aloft.
Siege of Leningrad went for 872 days. According to the figure quoted on Nuremberg process, during that time 632 thousands people died, 3% of them from enemy bombardments, and 97% from hunger.
