The 2009 Taipei Deaflympics began with the opening ceremony held at the new Taipei Stadium on Saturday 5 September. One of the first events the next day was the men's 1,000 metre sprint cycling race held on the road outside Taipei City Hall on Sunday. The gold medal was won by Paul Wood of the USA.
The gold medal went to 41 year old Paul Wood of the USA. Wood is competing in his sixth Deaflympics. He has won four gold medals along with four silvers and one bronze at previous games. He could well add even more to his collection as he is set to compete in more cycling events in Taipei.
