Lal Mohammad, a 40 year old farmer was on his way to a polling station last week to vote in the second Afghan Elections. Aware of Taliban threats against those who voted in what the theocratic movement state is a phony facade Lal braved it to the polls.
Rumours spread in Afghanistan that those who were found with indelible ink on their finger would have it cut off, but that did not dissuade him.
He was heading back from the polling station in the rural community in Daykundi, a mountainous region of central Afghanistan when he was attacked by a militia.
They cut off his ears and nose once they found upon his person his voting registration card, he was later discovered unconscious and taken to hospital where he still lies today with a mutilated head.

New: For any human being to do
For any human being to do this to another is beyond belief. Lal Mohammed is the hero of the story, a lone man confronted by a gang of men, doubtless none of whom would have had the guts to attack him alone. My commitment to Allied intervention in Afghanistan has wavered recently, but this kind of story reassures me that we must continue to fight these dreadful, cruel, ignorant people.
Well done Besmellah. Stay safe but keep the stories coming.
