Kashmir's tulip garden(Asia’s largest), where the flowers are in full bloom, was thrown open for visitors in summer capital Srinagar on Thursday, 25th March 25, 2010. 'The garden has become a major attraction and an ideal visiting spot for both tourists and locals,' said Sheikh Farhan, assistant flori-culture officer. 'Red, yellow, variegated, pink, white, orange, light blue, and magenta are the main colours of tulips that are in bloom right now, Farhan said in order to prolong the flowering season, many annual bulbs including phlox, candytuft, antirrhinum, and pansies have also been sown in the garden this year. In order to prolong the flowering season of the garden, we have planted around 25 lakh bulbs of these annual flowers since tulips remain in bloom for just 15 to 20 days depending on the temperature here,' he added. The tulip garden in Srinagar is situated on the foothills of the Zabarwan mountain range on the banks of the Dal Lake here. 'The tulips cover an area of over 12 acres and gradually the area is being increased,' Farhan said.

The enchanting scenario is attributed to the thousands of almond trees that blossom and present a surreal blanket of white and pink in the majestic mountainous landscape. For locals, these flowers indicate the arrival of spring, a season that attracts tourists from all parts of the country and abroad. “These flowers indicate the departure of winter and the arrival of spring. The enchanting beauty of almond flowers attracts tourists from around the world,” Sameer Butt said, a resident of Srinagar. Almond trees are among the first to bloom in the valley lending an aromatic air to the spring.

The Dal Lake, in Srinagar , represents an enchanting and unique ecosystem and is the second largest lake in the state. Surrounded by mountains the area is integral to Kashmir tourism. Srinagar, India. 09/02/2010. The lake is surrounded by mountains on three sides and a large number of gardens and orchards have been laid along the shores. Dal Lake is unique in having hundreds of house boats which afford an opportunity to tourists to reside on the lake in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility. The water quality of the Dal Lake has deteriorated considerably in the last two decades. Large peripheral areas have been reclaimed and converted into floating gardens. With the increase in the tourist influx a large number of residential buildings, restaurants and hotels have come up along the lake front. The number of house boats has also been increasing at an alarming rate. As a result of rapid and unplanned urbanization, large quantities of raw sewage are discharged in the lake water,

A teenage boy was shot dead, allegedly by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on the outskirts of Srinagar, leading to fresh protests and prompting state authorities to constitute an enquiry into the incident. The incident took place near famous mughal garden (Nishat Bagh) when 16-year-old Zahid Farooq Shah was shot. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. Srinagar, India. 05/02/2010. According to an eye-witnesses, some boys were sitting on the roadside when an unidentified security vehicle came and fired at them. As his body was handed over to his family, a large number of people came out of their houses and joined the protests demanding stern action against the 'erring' personnel. The killing of the boy comes with a lot of tension since Sunday following the death of class VII student Wamik Farooq in alleged tear gas shelling by police.
